Lead Based Paint Testing

Our risk assessors and inspectors perform lead-based paint (LBP) inspections, risk assessments and clearance inspections in accordance with state, the USEPA, and/or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development regulations and for OSHA purposes. Inspections are performed in buildings using either an X-ray fluorescence analyzer (XRF) or the collection of bulk paint samples to test painted surfaces for lead in each sample location. XRF technology is a non-invasive, non-destructive means to determine the presence of lead in paint, even in painted surfaces several layers below the surface.

In some instances, bulk sample collection of lead paint may be necessary. These samples are sent to accredited laboratories for analysis. Qualtek also has the expertise to test surface dust, water, and bare soil for lead content.

LEAD POISONING IS THE #1 PREVENTABLE CHILDHOOD DISEASE IN THE UNITED STATES.

Although it was banned 40 years ago, it may still be present in about 80% of housing stock in the New York tri-state area, which was built prior to the ban. The danger is more present than ever, because after 40 years, the lead paint is now breaking down, causing serious health risks.

Children can easily ingest household lead because it can be present all around them — in paint chips, tap water, dust and the soil. The younger the child, the more damage lead poisoning can do. If the source of the lead is not determined and removed, the poisoning will continue.

QUALTEK’S LEAD INSPECTORS ARE LICENSED, CERTIFIED, AND HAVE 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE.

WHEN SHOULD I TEST FOR LEAD PAINT?

  • If you rent or own a house or apartment built before 1978 (the year lead paint was banned for residential use)
  • If you are buying, selling, or renting a condominium, co-op or home built before 1978
  • Before beginning any renovation
  • Before disturbing a painted surface
  • Before beginning any demolition project on a property built before 1978

Lead can be present in multiple locations in and around the home, including in paint, in water, and in the soil. Ingestion of lead can lead to lead poisoning, so having a home tested for lead is critical in the following scenarios.

WARNING:

REMOVING OR DISTURBING LEAD-PAINTED SURFACES IMPROPERLY CAN INCREASE THE HAZARD TO YOUR FAMILY, BECAUSE LEAD DUST CAN BE SPREAD AROUND THE HOUSE. USE ONLY CONTRACTORS AND PROFESSIONALS CERTIFIED IN LEAD-SAFE WORK PRACTICES, WHO FOLLOW STRICT SAFETY RULES WHEN WORKING WITH LEAD.
